Cyclocross is Coming...

August 24, 2016

The cyclocross season is almost upon us.

Whilst most of us are hanging onto the coat tails of summer, others are starting to dream ahead of wet Sunday mornings, and an hour slogging through a field somewhere thats not on your sat-nav. That’s right its now only a few weeks until the start of the Cyclocross season and now is the time to roll out your trusty steed and get it ready for the impending onslaught of mud, sweat and totally unnecessary hurdles!

For the uninitiated CX is a great opportunity to maintain your winter fitness and also learn some great bike handling skills. The season runs from September to January with league systems in place where you can accumulate points based on your position. Each event is run on a short course of about 1km and lasts no more than an hour. Races are split into age categories from youth under 8’s through to over 50’s. You will need a specific CX bike or mountain bike to ride, as many of the events are very muddy and you need clearance for off road tyres.

At Flamme Rouge we have a number of CX enthusiasts ready to help you, whether it be considering riding your first event or fine tuning for the seasoned league rider. Throughout the season our team will be blogging about their experiences of CX. Daniel (mechanic) is our seasoned crosser who is riding the Eastern league in the over 50’s category plus the Three Peaks CX. Will is embarking on his first foray into CX and Samuel (Jamie’s son) will be moving up                                                                                             through the youth ranks after a good result                                                                                     in last years Eastern league

We also have a range of CX bikes and accessories and some great offers to kick off the season. We are lucky to be within a short distance of 2 great regional leagues in the Central CX league and Eastern CX league and hope to be at some of the more local events to help and cheer you on your way.

Links to forthcoming CX events:

Below are links to the 2 local leagues and also some key events that are worth considering in your CX plans:

Central CX Leaguehttp://centralcxl.org.uk/

The calendar starts on 25th September and has expended this year to 16 events with many rounds for this league within an hour of Bedford. The race schedule includes novice adult events along with age group races from under 8’s to 50+

Eastern CX Leaguehttp://www.easterncross.org.uk/

This is a very competitive league starting on 10th September with some rounds nearby to Bedford including Grafham Water, Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City. Again races are run in age categories from under 8’s to 50+ riders.

Tour of the Cornfields: The Traditional local season opener, this is a 100km off road race around the bridleways and roads of Cambridgeshire. For some almost an off road sportive but definitely a great day out across many paths and bridleways that are normally off limits for the rest of the year. This is a great way to test your early season fitness or try and get some form before the racing starts in earnest.

The Three Peaks CX: Probably the oldest, toughest and most iconic CX race in the UK. Described by some as more of a hike and ride across the Yorkshire Dales, but definitely a pilgrimage for many, this is a bucket list ride for most CX riders. This year Daniel has secured a place and will be sharing his experiences on his blog. http://3peakscyclocross.org.uk/
