The first race of the season finally came around this weekend and, like most others, I was eager to get back on the start line. This year that first race was the North Bucks RC round of the Milton Keynes Bowl Spring Series.
It seems like a simple thing, but its easy to overlook the preparation involved in actually going to a race. With a winter of training between me and the Team MK 2 Day, it was surprising at how much thought went into what used to be very simple tasks. Packing kit, getting my Émonda ready and even just pinning the number onto the back of the skin suit proved to take much longer than I remembered, and it was inevitable I was going to forget something - arm warmers!
Attacks came thick and fast as the race began. Everyone seemed to be testing the water and, considering I didn't know too many people in the field, sitting in the bunch and working out who was feeling strong was my plan. Although, time really does fly in a race, and with only an hour to play with it was soon going to get interesting...
Just over half way through, after a few little digs from almost everyone (myself included), Marcus Burnett from Spirit-Tifosi put in a committed attack, eventually gaining around 25 seconds on the bunch. Everyone was looking at each other to chase, so with 15 mins to go a 5 lap chase saw me bridge across ready for a head-to-head race for the win.
With a much slower final lap ending with a sprint for the line, Marcus came out on top to take a well earned victory as I followed in 2nd place. Pleased to get a good start to the season with Team Flamme Rouge and on to Jock Wadley next weekend!
